NAHP Exhibitions

In line with our mission to enhance the visibility and accessibility of papermaking, create new avenues for artists, and cultivate experiences deeply rooted in papermaking techniques and history, the North American Hand Papermakers actively curates diverse exhibitions. These showcases emerging, mid-career, and established artists and curators on regional, national, and international stages. Our annual open calls are a cornerstone of our exhibition efforts, inviting artists, curators, collectives, cultural producers, and intellectuals to propose exhibitions that align with our mission.

Our primary objective is to promote critical artistic trends in handmade paper art, foster insightful discourse, and highlight the significance of papermaking within today's global context, broader cultural landscapes, and historical narratives. We're committed to inspiring the next generation of papermakers, recognizing the modern paper community, and igniting scholarly explorations into papermaking and its associated fields. To this end, NAHP organizes a diverse range of exhibitions, including the Annual Members' Showcase, a unique Triennial Exhibition Series, and also offers artists the chance to propose an Exchange Portfolio.

Entry Fees: NAHP's Exhibition program is funded by its dues, program income, catalog sales, and entry fees. The annual members' showcase is a complimentary feature for members, serving as a membership benefit. The Collegiate and Juried Triennial exhibitions levy entry fees to cater to juror honoraria and certain exhibition-related costs, such as speakers and installation (entry fees are discounted for NAHP members). Meanwhile, the Curated Triennial does not charge any fees; its expenses, including curatorial honoraria, are met through other sources of NAHP income.

NAHP Annual Members' Showcase

The NAHP Members' Showcase exhibition annually features paper and paper art made by our members. Entry is restricted to current NAHP members, and submissions are reviewed by a committee or by judges. There are no fees, and members are encouraged to submit work which is installation-ready.

Triennial Exhibition Series

Collegiate Paper Art Triennial

Every 3 years, up and coming collegiate papermakers are encouraged to participate in the juried Collegiate Paper Triennial traveling exhibition. The show offers great exposure to college and graduate students in academic papermaking programs and gathers talent from all across North America into a single show.

Juried Exhibition Triennial

The year following the Collegiate Paper Triennial features a juried exhibition of papermakers and paper artists who are not in school. Participants are invited to share works made within the last two years to capture the latest trends and practices in the world of papermaking.

Guest Curated Exhibition Triennial

The year following the NAHP juried exhibition is a guest curated special topics exhibition featuring 5 or more artists or highlighting some relevant research in the field of hand papermaking. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed during the spring with a 2-year lead time. (i.e. proposals selected in 2022 will be exhibited in 2024)

NAHP Themed Exchange Portfolios

NAHP extends a call to artists to curate themed exchange portfolios for display during the Annual Conference. This includes opportunities to curate or coordinate representation of NAHP at various conferences such as the Southern Graphics Council, College Book Arts Association, IAPMA, and other trade or academic conferences.
