“North American Hand Papermakers helps connect the community of papermakers in the US through publications, conferences, and other opportunities.”

— Nicole Donnelly, Executive Director of The Morgan Conservatory, former president 2022-2023 of North American Hand Papermakers, and former president 2015-2021 of International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA)

About Us

North American Hand Papermakers (formerly Friends of Dard Hunter) is an organization that brings together people interested in hand papermaking, to encourage sharing of practical, historical, and artistic knowledge about the craft. It was founded in 1981 as Friends of the Dard Hunter Paper Museum to preserve the collection of books, papers, equipment, and artifacts collected from around the world by Dard Hunter in his many years of research on hand papermaking. The collection contained materials that escaped destruction in World War II, and  subsequently constituted itself as the Dard Hunter Paper Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin. In 1993, the Museum, now called the Dard Hunter Collection as part of the American Museum of Papermaking (today the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking), opened in Atlanta in 1993, on the Georgia Tech campus, where it finds a permanent home. Financial support for this unique collection remains one of the primary goals of NAHP. NAHP honors the work of Hunter and other practitioner-scholars, encouraging contemporary members of the papermaking community by holding annual meetings to exchange findings and research; exhibitions to advance the field of hand papermaking; and publications to share more widely on topics relevant to papermaking. NAHP’s activities focus on North America, but we welcome members from around the world.

Our Mission

Through its annual meetings, exhibitions, and publications, North American Hand Papermakers provides a forum for exchanging information, craft, history, science, and technology of papermaking and related crafts which captured the imagination of Dard Hunter (1883-1966). NAHP encourages the study of paper and papermaking, paper artistry, preservation of historical sites and artifacts, conservation, and scientific and technical research.

NAHP's activities are intended to serve as a conduit between artists, scientists, historians, and other practitioners and researchers in the discipline. Our meetings connect current and historical practice. Our exhibitions are intended to convey to the public the diverse and wide-ranging endeavors that comprises the field of hand papermaking. The collected artifacts, books, archives, and other materials, which were formerly called the Dard Hunter Paper Museum (now called the Dard Hunter Collection), form the core collection of the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum in Atlanta, Ga. Promoting interest in the collection as an important part of the world's cultural heritage is central to our purpose.
